Indonesia names 'mastermind' of Jakarta attacks

Police say Indonesian Bahrun Naim working for ISIL funded deadly attack that killed two civilians and five attackers.

Police have named an Indonesian, Bahrun Naim, as the mastermind of Thursday's deadly attack in Jakarta's main business district after it arrested three men in a pre-dawn raid.
The arrests on Friday came less than 24 hours after the shooting and bombing rampage, the first such attack in the world's most populous Muslim nation since 2009, which killed seven people. Five of the dead were the attackers themselves.

Indonesia moves against the Islamic State

Police said Naim, who spent one year in jail for illegal possession of weapons in 2011, funded the attack. He is now believed to be in Syria fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
"His vision is to unite all ISIS-supporting elements in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines," Jakarta police chief Tito Karnavian said.
The police chief of Depok, where the arrests were made, told Metro TV that the men - which he described as a bomb-maker, a firearms expert and a preacher - were not linked to the Jakarta attack.
Raids were also under way across other parts of the populous island of Java and on other islands to round up suspects behind the attack, Reuters reported.
"Now we are sweeping in and outside Java, because we have captured several members of their group, and have identified them," National Police spokesman Anton Charliyan told Reuters.
At least 20 people were wounded when at least five attackers opened fire near a Starbucks coffee house in the city. Those killed included an Indonesian and a Canadian.
Officials said the attackers were armed with light weapons and suicide belts. Six blasts occurred about 50 metres apart in the central business district, which also houses a United Nations office.
The attacks were claimed by the ISIL group in a statement on Thursday, in which the group claimed it had killed 15 people.
Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman, reporting from Jakarta, said many circumstances surrounding the attacks on Thursday remained unclear.
"There's not a state of emergency but certainly a heightened level of alert ... three individuals are being questioned at the moment. Whether there were any that got away is one line of inquiry.
"Who are they, where did they come from, how did they get into Jakarta, who helped them get in, did anyone house them?
"The munitions that were used, the rifles and the explosives, where did all of that come from? That's what's being looked into by investigators

New Ebola case confirmed in Sierra Leone

Medical tests confirm new Ebola death in Sierra Leone, just hours after WHO declares West Africa free of the virus. 

A body has been tested positive for Ebola in northern Sierra Leone, just hours after the World Health Organization had declared West Africa Ebola-free, a Health Ministry official told Al Jazeera.
Two tests were carried out on the body from Tonkolili district by UK medical experts before confirming the case on Friday, according to Sidie Yahya Tunis.
The deceased patient, a 22-year-old woman, was attending school when she fell sick and returned home to her parents in the city of Magburaka on January 7. She died on January 12.
"It seems like an isolated case. We have not confirmed Ebola cases since September 13," Tunis said.
"The virus was recently contracted by the victim. However, since the victim was female, there is a chance that she contracted the disease by interaction with a male Ebola survivor."

An American tourist died earlier this week after a mob of Indian villagers mistook him for a thief and chased him until he fell into a swampy rice paddy, where he choked on muddy water, local police said Thursday. The tourist, identified by his passport as 30-year-old Caitanya Holt, was eventually pulled out of the mud by police using ropes on Tuesday, but he was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital in the western state of Goa, police officer Umesh Gaonkar said. The cause of death has not yet been determined. Police were waiting for US Consulate officials to arrive from Mumbai to carry out an autopsy, Gaonkar said.

The International Olympic Committee says it will work closely with the new leadership of track and field's governing body and will "undertake any necessary action" to protect sports from corruption.
The IOC says it "takes note" of the second report of the World Anti-Doping Agency panel's report into corruption and doping involving former leaders of the IAAF.
The IOC says in a statement that the report "underlines the importance of the protection of the clean athletes" and "we will continue to work closely with the new leadership of the IAAF."
The IOC says it supports the report's call for good governance in sports organizations.
The Olympic body will "now study the report in detail and will undertake any necessary action to protect and strengthen the integrity of sport."
The WADA report said former IAAF president Lamine Diack "was responsible for organizing and enabling the conspiracy and corruption that took place." It said he "sanctioned and appears to have had personal knowledge of the fraud and the extortion of athletes."
Diack is a former IOC member.
The IOC noted that it suspended Diack after the first WADA report came out in November, and that Diack subsequently resigned as an honorary member.
The WADA report indicated that Diack was prepared to sell his vote in the bidding for the 2020 Olympics in exchange for sponsorship of IAAF events.
The panel, chaired by Canadian IOC member Dick Pound, said it "did not investigate this matter further for it was not within our remit."

Sebastian Coe's position as President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is set to come under even more pressure when the second part of the report due to be published here later today by the World Anti-Doping Agency Independent Commission will claim top officials must have been aware of the growing problem with doping in Russia. 

Richard Pound, chairman of the WADA Independent Commission, writes that the crisis "cannot be blamed on a small number of miscreants," insidethegames has been told.
"The corruption was embedded in the organisation," Pound writes in the report, which is scheduled to be officially published at 3pm local time.
"It cannot be ignored or dismissed as attributable to the odd renegade acting on his own."

China's revenge on human rights Lawyers

Several Chinese rights lawyers, including a woman who represented high-profile women's rights advocates, have been formally arrested on state subversion charges about six months after they were taken away, fellow lawyers said Wednesday.
The serious charge carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment and is an indication that the ruling Communist Party sees this group of lawyers as a threat to its monopoly on power.
The lawyers have sought to use China's own laws to hold officials accountable or to protect citizens who have been critical of the government, though they also have been linked to protests outside courthouses that authorities have labeled as illegal attempts to short-circuit the judicial system.
Maya Wang, a Hong Kong-based researcher with Human Rights Watch, said charging lawyers with state subversion was "unprecedented."

Li Yuhan, a lawyer for Wang Yu, said Wednesday that Wang Yu's mother had received formal arrest notices for the lawyer on a charge of state subversion. Her husband, Bao Longjun, was arrested for allegedly inciting state subversion, a charge that is less serious but which also carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
Wang Yu defended one of the five women, who became known as the Feminist Five and were detained last March after they planned to hand out flyers against sexual harassment in several Chinese cities in a case that drew international scrutiny.

The Israeli military carried out a rare airstrike in Gaza on Wednesday, targeting a group of Palestinian militants placing explosives along the border and killing one of them, Israeli and Palestinian officials said.
The Israeli military said its aircraft located the group along Gaza's northern border with Israel as they were planning to detonate an explosive device against Israeli troops on the other side. "Forces guarding the border with Gaza face a growing threat from hostile terror groups attempting to destabilize the situation on the ground," said Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a military spokesman.

Istanbul suicide bomber registered at refugee agency a week before attack

The suicide bomber behind an attack Tuesday that left 10 Germans dead in Istanbul’s main tourist area had registered with a refugee agency last week, providing fingerprints that allowed officials to quickly identify him, a Turkish official revealed Wednesday.
Turkish media, including newspapers close to the government, identified the bomber as Nabil Fadli and said he was born in Saudi Arabia. Turkish authorities previously had identified the bomber as a Syrian born in 1988 with links to the Islamic State terror group.
Turkish Interior Minister Interior Minister Efkan Ala on Wednesday confirmed reports that the bomber had registered with a refugee agency, but said the bomber wasn't on any Turkish or international watch lists for ISIS militants.
“Your assessment that his fingerprints were taken and there is a record of him is correct” he told reporters at a news conference,according to Reuters.
Turkey’s Haberturk newspaper published CCTV pictures purportedly showing Fadli at an immigration office in Istanbul on Jan. 5. It said he was traced to the bombing after authorities took a sample of a finger at the blast site.
The news about the bomber came as Turkish police arrested one person suspected of having a direct link to the attack.
The suspect was detained in Istanbul late Tuesday, Ala said. He didn't provide further details.
Turkish police on Wednesday arrested 13 more suspected ISIS militants, including three Russians, but it wasn't clear if those arrests were directly linked to the Istanbul bombing.
The Russians were detained in the Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya, a popular destination for tourists. The state-run Anadolu Agency said the suspects were allegedly in contact with ISIS fighters in conflict zones and had provided logistical support to the group. Ten other people were detained in Turkey's third largest city, Izmir, and in the central city of Konya.

A suspected member of the Islamic State (IS) group has killed 10 people, at least nine of them German tourists, in a suicide bomb attack in the Turkish city of Istanbul, officials say.

The recapture of drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman took a surprise, Hollywood twist when a Mexican official said security forces located the world's most-wanted trafficker thanks to a secret interview with U.S. actor Sean Penn.

Penn's interview with Guzman, who has twice escaped from Mexican maximum security prisons, appeared late Saturday on the website of Rolling Stone magazine. It was purportedly held at an undisclosed hideout in northern Mexico in late 2015, several months before Guzman's recapture Friday in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, after six months on the run.

In the interview, Guzman defends his work at the head of the world's biggest drug trafficking organization. Local report claims US troops deployed in Syria's Aleppo

US ground forces have been stationed in the surrounding areas of Tishrin Dam Northeast of Aleppo province after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) seized full control of the dam from the ISIL nearly two weeks ago, media reports disclosed on Friday.

"US troops are presently in control of the Tishrin Dam," the Arabic service of Deutsche Welle news channel quoted Syria's Local Coordinating Committees as saying on Friday.

This is the first US deployment of ground forces in Syria after the crisis started in the country in March 2011.

The US deployment runs counter to President Obama's repeated claims that his country would have "no boots on the ground" in Iraq and Syria.

    

On November 25, the Syrian Local Coordinating Committees announced that the US officers and soldiers had entered the town of Kobani and on December 22 they set up an operations room with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Mesrin in the Northern part of Aleppo province in a bid to take control of Tishrin Dam.

On December 26, the SDF seized control of Tishrin Dam on the Euphrates river at the border of Raqqa and Aleppo provinces and almost a dozen villages in the nearby regions in Northern Aleppo province.

Sources also said that US warplanes staged massive strikes on ISIL targets near the Dam.
